Common problems with pavers
Sinking pavers around pool decks and patios
"I had a guy come pressure wash my pool deck and now my pavers have sunk. I need help." A customer once told us this and we're here to say "It's probably not his fault." Here's why. Air pockets often form around pool walls. Pavers and travertine tiles are typically installed on top of sand. Sand shifts and trickles down into those air pockets causing the pavers or tile to sink. A power washer causes a light vibration causing more sand to trickle into air pockets, causing more sinking. The pressure washer guy didn't cause the problem, he just exposed it.
Brick separation on driveways
Why do pavers separate on driveways? Because when you turn your steering wheel, your tires exert a lot of pressure on the pavers, causing them to separate. In addition, landscapers often use ride-on lawn mowers and turn around on your pavers, causing them to shift and sometimes break on the edges of your driveway. Once the cement edge has been compromised, the pavers have more freedom to shift.
Root intrusion under walkways
If you've ever had a large tree growing close to your walkway, you know how destructive root intrusion can be. Roots are a force of nature to be reckoned with; upheaving sidewalks, driveways, curbs...even public roads.
Broken pavers
Believe it or not, this is less common than the other three because pavers are extremely resilient. If you have chipped or broken pavers, we can replace them.

Driveway repair
Brick separation
As mentioned above, tires exert a lot of pressure on brick pavers which causes them to separate at the edge of your driveway. This is the number one reason brick driveways need repair. First, we will pull up the affected pavers. Next, we bring in base rock and sand, re-level everything, put the bricks back tightly together, re-cement the border edge, and make sure all is secure.
Broken pavers
If you've got a cracked or broken paver, there's no fixing it. It must be replaced. However, typically we recommend leaving it alone because chances are no one will notice it. But if you're adamant about replacing it, you should know that finding a perfect match is nearly impossible. The new paver might match a little but it won't be 100%.

Pool deck repair

Sunken pavers
Here's the thing with sunken pavers...the problem of the underlying air pockets is larger than you think. While you may only see one or two sagging pavers, if you remove them and look underneath, you'll see that air pockets extend much further out than expected.
A good paver repair company will do a thorough job the first time so you don't have to call them again to come fix your patio or pool deck. Here's what we do:

A good paver repair company will do a thorough job the first time so you don't have to call them again to come fix your patio or pool deck. Here's what we do:
- Pull up the pavers.
- Using a long steel rod, we inject water into the air pockets, causing sand to collapse into the pocket.
- We bring in fresh, new sand to bring it up to an optimum level.
- We pack the sand down using tampers.
- Replace the bricks and level.
Why hire professional paver contractors?
We believe in educating our clients who prefer to fix their pavers themselves. Just know that repairing pavers is extremely labor intensive. It's easier if you have the right tools and know-how. If you don't, get ready for a long day of back breaking work.
On your pool deck, you have to be extremely careful. If you use a machine tamp or you tamp too hard, you run the risk of breaking the plumbing underneath (such as the skimmer and the autofill) and having an even bigger problem...a pool leak.
On the other hand, you can hire licensed professionals. Leave the heavy lifting to us while you relax knowing the job is being done right. To the best of our knowledge, we are the only local company that warranties our repairs for up to one year.
If any sinking happens again within a year, we'll come out and fix it, no questions asked. We stand behind our work and our reviews on the Better Business Bureau, Google, and Angies List attest to that. Ready to get started?
